Communication

"Nice to hear from you"

The HF radio system appears to be rapidly loosing popularity in the Outback. Most stations prefer the use of the DRC telephone system and its privacy. Vehicle/airplane/base communication is now the domain of UHF radio and associated UHF repeaters.

Communication with aircraft is easily achieved with a handheld waterproof UHF transceiver providing you have prior knowledge of the call channels they use. Marree uses UHF channel 7 with a repeater at Muloorina and William Creek use UHF channel 6. Larger craft with 12 Volt batteries can use higher power UHF units which can communicate directly to neighbouring towns via repeater.

Communication is also possible with persons remaining at "Home Base" via their UHF in vehicle unit.
